Engineering Colleges That Accept JEE Main Scores Outside JoSAA
JoSAA and CSAB don't cover the entire universe of colleges that value a JEE Main score. A number of respected institutions – some state-run, some private – run their own admission processes built around JEE Main rank or percentile, completely separate from the JoSAA system. Knowing about these widens your options significantly, especially if JoSAA and CSAB don't land you where you hoped.
IIITs That Skip JoSAA Entirely
It surprises a lot of candidates to learn that not every IIIT is part of JoSAA. IIIT Hyderabad and IIIT Bangalore – both well-regarded, autonomous institutes – run their own separate admission processes rather than participating in JoSAA's counselling, even though most other IIITs across the country do. If either is on your radar, you'll need to apply directly through their own admission portals rather than expecting to see them in your JoSAA choice list.
State-Level Counselling That Uses JEE Main
Several states run their own engineering admission counselling for government and government-aided colleges within the state, and a number of these use JEE Main rank or percentile as the basis for at least part of their seat matrix – sometimes alongside a state entrance exam, sometimes instead of one. Examples include Delhi's Joint Admission Counselling for institutes like DTU and NSUT, and Punjab's centralised counselling for institutes such as PEC Chandigarh. Rules, eligibility, and the exact role JEE Main plays differ significantly from state to state and change periodically, so always check the specific state counselling authority's website directly rather than assuming a state's process mirrors another's.
Private & Deemed Universities
A number of private and deemed universities accept JEE Main scores directly for at least a portion of their engineering seats, without requiring their own separate entrance test:
- Thapar Institute of Engineering & Technology, Patiala – uses JEE Main percentile as a basis for admission to its B.E./B.Tech programmes.
- BIT Mesra (Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra, Ranchi) – admits through JEE Main for many of its programmes. Don't confuse this with BITS Pilani, Goa, or Hyderabad, which are a different institution entirely and run their own separate BITSAT exam, not JEE Main – this mix-up trips up a surprising number of applicants every year.
- SRM Institute of Science and Technology – runs its own entrance exam but also considers JEE Main scores for certain programmes and campuses.
- SASTRA University and Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham – both consider JEE Main scores for a portion of their intake, alongside their own processes.
Admission policies at private universities change fairly often – the share of seats offered through JEE Main, minimum qualifying percentile, and participating campuses can all shift year to year. Treat the list above as a starting point for research, not a final answer, and confirm current details on each university's own admissions page before making any decisions.
How to Approach This Practically
- Don't wait for JoSAA results to start researching these options – most run on their own, earlier timelines with separate application deadlines.
- Apply broadly if you're keeping options open; there's usually no restriction on applying to state counselling, private universities, and JoSAA/CSAB simultaneously.
- Keep your documents ready in advance – see our documents required guide – since many of these processes ask for the same paperwork as JoSAA.
- If your board percentage is under the JoSAA eligibility threshold, these routes are particularly worth exploring, since many don't apply the same 75%/65% board eligibility rule.
