About IIT Dharwad
Established in 2016 under the mentorship of IIT Bombay, IIT Dharwad began academic activities that July with just three branches – Computer Science, Electrical, and Mechanical Engineering – operating out of a temporary campus at the Water and Land Management Institute (WALMI) on the outskirts of Dharwad, Karnataka. Its permanent 470-acre campus at Chikkamalligawad became fully operational in March 2023. The institute has since grown to eight B.Tech programmes plus BS tracks in Mathematics and Physics, and has earned a 5-star GRIHA (Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment) rating for its campus master plan – one of very few IITs with that distinction.
Academic Strengths
- Computer Science & Engineering: The most competitive programme on campus, and one of the institute's original three founding branches.
- Space Data Science Lab: A dedicated research centre supported by CSR funding from Antrix Corporation, ISRO's commercial arm.
- Clean energy research: The Global Centre of Excellence for Affordable and Clean Energy, funded through Honeywell Foundation CSR contributions.
- BS in Mathematics and Physics: A distinct science-track option alongside the engineering programmes, less common among IITs of a similar founding era.

How Reserved Categories Compare
JoSAA keeps a separate closing rank for every category – General, EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, and PwD – and each one is a position within that category's own applicant pool, not the overall merit list. As a rule, EWS tracks closest to the General figure, OBC-NCL relaxes further, and SC/ST relax the most of all, since fewer candidates compete within each of those pools.
