IIT Hyderabad: Complete Guide & JoSAA 2026 Cutoff, Round Wise

Founded well after the original IITs, IIT Hyderabad has still climbed into most "top 10" IIT lists faster than almost any other institute in the system. Here's what's driving that, and how its 2026 JoSAA cutoffs moved round by round.

About IIT Hyderabad

Established in 2008, IIT Hyderabad is one of the newer, "second-generation" IITs, located at Kandi near Sangareddy in Telangana. Despite its relatively young age, it has built an unusually strong research reputation in a short span, particularly in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and materials science, and has climbed national rankings faster than most institutes founded in the same era.

Academic Strengths

  • Artificial Intelligence & Computer Science: A standout, fast-growing research and academic focus that has driven much of the institute's rising reputation.
  • Materials Science & Engineering: A notable research strength relative to the institute's age.
  • Design: A well-regarded design programme alongside core engineering branches.
  • Modern, research-first campus: Built from the ground up with a strong emphasis on interdisciplinary research infrastructure.

JoSAA 2026 Cutoff, Round Wise

Across JoSAA 2026's five rounds – the final round declared 16 July 2026 – IIT Hyderabad's CSE closing rank has typically opened in the 300s–600 range and closed between roughly 600 and 670, placing it ahead of most other newer IITs and closer to the "old IIT" cluster than its founding year would suggest – a reflection of how quickly its reputation has grown.

JoSAA 2026 Cutoff, Round Wise

JoSAA 2026 ran five rounds, with the final round declared on 16 July 2026. The table below is IIT Hyderabad's complete final-round (Round 5) result, pulled directly from JoSAA's own OR-CR portal – OPEN category, gender-neutral seats, across every programme on offer. Artificial Intelligence and Mathematics & Computing both closed inside rank 930, essentially level with CSE – a reflection of how much this institute's reputation now rests on its computing and AI programmes specifically.

How Reserved Categories Compare

JoSAA keeps a separate closing rank for every category – General, EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, and PwD – and each one is a position within that category's own applicant pool, not the overall merit list. As a rule, EWS tracks closest to the General figure, OBC-NCL relaxes further, and SC/ST relax the most of all, since fewer candidates compete within each of those pools. That pattern holds across every branch at IIT Hyderabad, CSE included.

We're not publishing specific OBC-NCL, SC, or ST numbers for IIT Hyderabad here – the third-party sources available for category-specific figures disagree with each other widely enough, even for well-documented institutes, that citing one as fact would be misleading. For the precise, current closing rank in your own category and branch, use JoSAA's OR-CR tool directly on josaa.nic.in.

Placements

IIT Hyderabad has built a fast-growing placement record, with particularly strong recruitment in artificial intelligence, software, and core research roles, supported by the institute's rapidly rising research profile and strong industry partnerships in the Hyderabad technology corridor.
