IIT Indore: Complete Guide & JoSAA 2026 Cutoff, Round Wise
IIT Indore is one of the youngest institutes in the IIT system, yet consistently appears in "top 10" IIT lists alongside institutes decades older. Here's what's behind that rise, and how its 2026 JoSAA cutoffs moved round by round.
About IIT Indore
Established in 2009, IIT Indore is located in Madhya Pradesh and is among the newer, "second-generation" IITs. Despite its young age, it has built a fast-growing reputation, helped by a modern campus designed with research infrastructure in mind from the start, a strong design programme, and a notable astronomy and astrophysics research centre – an unusual specialised strength for an IIT of its age.
Academic Strengths
- Computer Science & Engineering: A fast-growing programme that has helped drive the institute's overall rise in reputation.
- Astronomy & Astrophysics: A distinctive research strength rarely found at other IITs of a similar founding era.
- Design programmes: A well-regarded design department alongside core engineering branches.
- Modern campus infrastructure: Built from the ground up with contemporary research facilities.

The table below is IIT Indore's complete final-round (Round 5) result, pulled directly from JoSAA's own OR-CR portal – OPEN category, gender-neutral seats, across every programme on offer. CSE and Mathematics & Computing are the clear top two, both closing inside rank 2,150, well ahead of every other programme on campus.
| Branch (Gender-Neutral, OPEN) | Round 5 (Final) Closing Rank |
|---|---|
| Computer Science & Engineering | 1,676 |
| Mathematics & Computing | 2,136 |
| Electrical Engineering | 3,350 |
| Engineering Physics | 7,062 |
| Mechanical Engineering | 7,561 |
| Space Science & Engineering | 7,950 |
| Chemical Engineering | 9,168 |
| Biomedical Engineering & Data Science | 11,519 |
| Civil Engineering | 11,604 |
| Metallurgical Engineering & Materials Science | 12,608 |
| Environmental Economics & Sustainable Engineering | 14,267 |

This is JoSAA 2026's final, closed result. Confirm the current year's actual figures on JoSAA's own OR-CR portal (josaa.nic.in) once that year's rounds are under way, rather than assuming this table still applies.
How Reserved Categories Compare
JoSAA keeps a separate closing rank for every category – General, EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, and PwD – and each one is a position within that category's own applicant pool, not the overall merit list. As a rule, EWS tracks closest to the General figure, OBC-NCL relaxes further, and SC/ST relax the most of all, since fewer candidates compete within each of those pools. That pattern holds across every branch at IIT Indore, CSE included.
We're not publishing specific OBC-NCL, SC, or ST numbers for IIT Indore here – the third-party sources available for category-specific figures disagree with each other widely enough, even for well-documented institutes, that citing one as fact would be misleading. For the precise, current closing rank in your own category and branch, use JoSAA's OR-CR tool directly on josaa.nic.in.
Placements
IIT Indore has built a steadily improving placement record, with growing recruitment in software, design, and core engineering roles, supported by its research-first campus culture and rising national reputation.
